The Ford Family Foundation has released the 2022 edition of Oregon by the Numbers – Key measures for Oregon and its counties. This is the 5th Edition.
The report divides data by county and by measure. The areas of measure broadly include Demographics and Land, Community, Education, Economy, Health, and Infrastructure. These are further subdivided. For instance, Community includes Food Insecurity, Child Poverty, Foster Care, Index crime, and voter participation.
As an example of what can be found using Douglas County. The Community section shows that Douglas County is 7th in the state with 14% of the population having food insecurity; 11th with 18.6% child poverty; and 4th in the state for the number of children in foster care with 17.4% (nearly 4% higher than rural counties as a whole). In contrast, in Oregon, 7.3% of all children are in foster care.
Index crimes include willful murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, and arson. Douglas County ranks 7th in the state with 30.7%, .1% higher than Urban Oregon, 1% higher than the state as a whole, and 5.9% higher than Rural Oregon as a whole.
Although Douglas County ranks in the top third for three of the four measures above, when it comes to voter participation, the data changes. Douglas County ranks at 27 out of 36 (tied with Wasco County) putting it in the bottom third. For contrast, Oregon as a whole ranks 82% for voting participation.
